A while ago I began a picture of a gum tree for my mum. It is a large picture (by my standards), and it has a slightly quilt/applique flavour to it.
Here it is so far:
I used an applique technique using interfacing and small areas of patchwork fabric to create the background, then stitched the details on top. I've mostly used stem stitch, chain stitch, back stitch and buttonhole stitch. As you can see I've finished the trunk and have done around half the leaves, I'm going to add some detail for a fence and grass down the bottom left.
But what do I do with it now? I started it a couple of years ago, and while I'm sort of happy with it my embroidery has come a long way since then and I no longer want to have it hung as an 'art' picture, but I'm not sure if it would translate well into a quilt.
I think it's going to need some more thought...
